ENDLESS CANVAS is an ongoing painting project by Tilo Schulz, launched in 2024. The exhibition at Museum Morsbroich marks the first museums presentation.

With ENDLESS CANVAS, Tilo Schulz developed the concept of an infinite painting: a work that expands in all directions without predetermined boundaries and that can potentially be extended indefinitely. The painting consists of an unspecified number of modular panels that form a cohesive field. Painterly gestures traverse the seams between the individual modules; lines extend beyond the edges, and colors flow across the boundaries. The result is not a series of individual works, but a process-oriented painting in perpetual extension that changes and reforms itself depending on the space, context, and presentation.

A fundamental concept behind ENDLESS CANVAS is that of openness and transcending boundaries. In doing so, the project also transcends the boundaries of the medium itself and invites interdisciplinary collaborations. In collaboration with Hungarian composer and media artist Gábor Lázár, as well as filmmakers Mathilde Bonnefoy and Dirk Wilutzky, painting, electronic sound, and film enter into a dialogue that reexamines the possibilities of contemporary painting and opens up new spaces.

Tilo Schulz (born in 1972 in Leipzig; lives and works in the Uckermark/Brandenburg) is one of the leading figures in the conceptually expanded field of contemporary art in Germany. His works operate at the intersection of painting, installation, and display, thereby opening up an expanded conception of painting. ENDLESS CANVAS exemplifies this practice. The work explores the idea of an unlimited painting, thereby questioning the institutional and spatial frameworks within which art is made visible. At the same time, through an abstract formal language, it addresses existential questions regarding the relationship between boundaries and openness, and between the individual and the collective.
